An online store might initially run its website and database on one machine. Then orders rise. Moving the database or workers to separate servers frees resources for the storefront.
Add Capacity to an Existing Application
Vertical scaling gives an existing Linux virtual private server more compute resources or storage. An upgrade makes sense when monitoring finds a resource limit, not merely slower responses.
Take a 4 GB machine. Persistent swapping during peak load suggests that memory is running short. Doubling the allocation to 8 GB could help. But that’s the case only if RAM is the bottleneck. Query performance deserves investigation too. In PostgreSQL, EXPLAIN lets administrators inspect a query’s execution plan. The output shows which operations the database expects to perform.
