THE impeachment trial of Vice-President (VP) Sara Duterte-Carpio is three days behind schedule, with weather-related suspensions and longer-than-planned witness testimony slowing proceedings, according to the Senate impeachment court spokesman.
“So the number of days allotted for the prosecution will simply be extended, eating into the days originally allocated for the defense,” spokesman Reginald A. Tongol told a news briefing in Filipino on Wednesday. “The defense’s number of days will just be reduced accordingly.”
The House of Representatives prosecution panel has asked the Senate impeachment court to extend hearing hours and add Fridays to recover lost time, saying interruptions could also affect witnesses expected to testify on alleged misuse of confidential funds.
House prosecution spokesman Robert Ace S. Barbers said the delays were not intentional but were slowing the trial and the effort to establish the truth.
