Shane Devereux on Growing up Between Two Sports Cities
ShareShareShareShareShare

His story is a useful one for anyone curious about how a specific upbringing, a sibling rivalry, and a few borrowed cities can shape how a person approaches work and life later on.

A Household Split Between Two Cities

Devereux’s parents are from Chicago, but he was born and raised near Philadelphia. That split shows up in small ways, mostly in which teams get cheered for on a Sunday afternoon. He follows Chicago sports alongside Philly ones, a habit that started at home and never really left.

Growing up with two cities in the mix instead of one tends to change how a kid watches a game. Instead of only knowing one fan base, one set of rivalries, and one version of heartbreak, there is a second lens running the whole time. Devereux has said it just became part of how he pays attention to sports: never fully settled on one side of the map.
